Chemical Hair Dye on Your Child’s Hair -Is There a Better Way?

Chemical Hair Dye on Your Child’s Hair -Is There a Better Way? -L.J. O’Neal, writer.Chemical Hair Dye for Children and Pre-Teens: A Serious Concern

Nowadays, there is a growing trend of dying children’s hair and using harsh chemical dyes to do so. Most parents know that children want to follow the trends of their peers.

Whether you decide for or against using permanent hair dye, it’s wise to heed the warnings from dermatologists, health organizations and governmental agencies -for the sake of your children and their healthy growth.

Parents, please take heed to the following warning:

Chemical Hair Dye Use Can Cause Severe Allergy

Chemical Hair Dye on Your Child’s Hair -Is There a Better Way? -L.J. O’Neal, writer.According to numerous dermatological and other medical reports hair dye allergy is on the rise. An article in the British Medical Journal* reported that in Japan, Denmark and USA, hair color use has increased among male and female youth. “Severe hair dye reactions among children have recently been reported.”

According to the FDA, adults using chemical hair dyes have suffered serious problems such as: hair loss, burning, redness, itchy or raw skin, swelling in the face, trouble breathing, permanent scarring and more.

There also have been several young dermatological patients that have suffered terrible skin reactions from chemical hair color dyes containing harsh ingredients such as Para-Phenylenediamine (PPD), coal tar, peroxide, ammonia and much more.  There are also studies that link prolonged use of such dyes to cancer.

In a nutshell: Permanent and most semi-permanent hair dye contains harsh chemical ingredients such as para-phenylenediamine (PPD), coal tar, peroxide, ammonia and much more -that have been medically proven to cause adverse damage to an adult scalp and hair shaft. The potential for damage to the developing skin and hair shaft of a young, preteen or teen is even greater.

I’m a Concerned Parent
Is there an alternative to chemical hair dye?

Chemical Hair Dye on Your Child’s Hair -Is There a Better Way? -L.J. O’Neal, writer. If you’re still determined to dye preteen or teen hair: Keep it natural. Use a proven safe and all natural (lab certified) hair coloring that coats the hair and does not penetrate the hair shaft. I recommend Lustrous Henna® hair color.  It’s a plant-based hair dye and is highly recommended by many dermatologists. Its ingredients have been used since ancient times to enhance hair color and for radiant natural highlights.

Following harmless fashion and style trends can bring joy and lots of fun. However, using harmful and dangerous substances to follow a trend isn’t wise and the consequences won’t be joyful at all. Parents, do you agree? I sincerely hope so.

-Why Not?

I’ve often wonder why Saba Botanical of USA receives many AFTER photos, but not so many BEFORE photos of their very happy customers. I pondered and pondered and realized there are several reasons for this:

  • If you have gray hair, you might be very shy about taking a pic, since that may be the main reason you color your hair with Lustrous Henna®!
  • You’re not shy about taking a pic, but doing so requires advance preparation and by the time you think about taking a photo, you’re finished!
  • You don’t have any gray hair, but you love the natural highlights that Lustrous Henna® brings out… then you’re so happy with the results that taking a photo and –sending it to Saba Botanical of USA- is the furthest thing from your mind!
  • The way you get your fabulous hair color is your secret and you love keeping this secret from all of your envious friends and associates.
  • You don’t mind sharing, but you don’t want your photo posted ‘everywhere’ (or multiple times).
  • You don’t have a camera. Seriously?! No cell phone?! (OK, I’m just joking here).

Other Natural Hair Coloring -Rave Reviews

“I have been using this product for a few years and it is amazing. I am allergic to the ingredients used in conventional hair dyes and thought I would never be able to color my hair again until I searched on line and found sababotanical .com. I highly recommend it whether you have an allergic problem or not.” -Jo-Ann A., Riverdale, NJ

“The most consistent henna product I have ever used. Always fresh and ready to go. Don’t need any fancy additives, just hot water & a splash of lemon juice (if you have hard water like me).”  -RMR, Lewisberry, PA

“This was my first time buying henna over the internet. The place I used to get it done, started adding stuff into the henna which made my scalp itch for weeks. I had no allergic reaction to the colour and will be buying more soon. The colour was very accurate. I have black hair and the soft brown was perfect for me. I also received the item promptly. Thank you for your good service.”  -Bagya S., Round Rock, TX

“I have been dyeing my hair for years but recently had a dreadful reaction to the hair dye being running sores all over my head, face and neck. Seen a specialist and he advised that I am now allergic and recommended trying henna although I had to be sure to test properly. My hairdresser was a concerned as she knew of a woman in Perth who had used henna and ended up in hospital for 3 days due to such a bad reaction. I researched the product and decided on your company. It was with great trepidation that the hairdresser and I tested this product extensively. The results are amazing and I intend to reorder.”  –Lynette M., Halls Head, WA Australia

Syed’s Message: My Story, My Hair and My Advice

“Once I wrote the following.

The more I learn about plants, the more I believe this truth:

“Although we all have to live through some ailments and other health problems from time to time, nature has created a remedy for every health problem in plants; whether it is fresh produce, dried herbs, essential oils or extracts. The key to beautiful health is using pure botanical ingredients derived from nature. The concept of natural beauty incorporates a philosophy based on the mystery of the therapeutic values and vital energy of plants.”

My black hair started to turn gray in my twenties. I felt that I was still too young to show gray and started using commercially available chemical dyes to hide my gray. After a while my scalp started to itch and my skin turned red where the dye was applied. As the time went by, it started to get worse with each dye application. Even the mildest of the dye I could find on the shelf caused a reaction to my scalp. My hair started to thin and bald spots started to develop, my thick hair was gone. I was struggling to hide my gray.

Someone told me that there is a “natural” product called Kali Mendhi (commonly called:  “Black Henna”). Hoping this would solve my problem, I bought a pack and applied it to my hair (not knowing this would turn into my worst nightmare). The very next day, blisters started appearing all over my scalp and side burns, my face swelled up and my eyes were almost shut. I was in agony and had to be rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. This was a frightening experience. Later on, I find out that Kali Mendhi (commonly called:  “Black Henna”) contained Paraphenylene-diamene (PPD), which caused this reaction.

While going from shelf to shelf of hair coloring products from one store to another, I could not find a product that was free of Ammonia, Peroxide and PPD or similar chemicals. Health food stores did carry some henna based coloring products but their results were so marginal, they were not worth the time and money.

I resorted to pure henna, which I feel is the greatest herb that exists on Planet Earth. The use of henna revived my hair and scalp. My hair started to look healthy again. The only problem with pure henna was: my gray hair turned reddish/orange, which was sort of scary. I started to get used to it, but always wished my hair was black (again).

I knew that there were millions of people out there that truly need a natural hypoallergenic hair dye.

One day, I met with an executive of AMA Herbal Labs with my idea for a totally all natural henna based hair color dye that could be packaged and produced in a variety of natural shades. He said, “We would be happy to take this project,” (not realizing how intricate this project would be). Within a year they produced a product which I named Lustrous Henna®. However, this initial product was no different than the weak products already selling in the health food stores.

Three years went by without any encouraging news. Then the second version of the product came out. The results still were not very encouraging. I was about to give up, when it finally “clicked” and they were really able to greatly improve on this product. Thus, I call this, the third generation of Lustrous Henna® that you can purchase from us now.

Lustrous Henna® is definitely worth bragging about: it does not contain PPD, Ammonia, Peroxide or toxic chemicals. It is a 100% natural hair dye. Nature still has the answer to all our needs, as we discovered and we benefit from it.

Lustrous Henna should be used by everyone who needs to dye their hair. It is safe and healthy.

Dry Hair Winter Season Protection

Dry Hair Protection During Winter -Season Reminders

Winter season.

Lock in that moisture for winter season.  For dry hair: condition daily (rinse in cooler water to seal in moisture), also use a light homemade leave-in conditioner: simply add enough water to current conditioner, mix well, spray a little in your hand and rub through hair or spritz on hair with a spray bottle; avoid cleansing shampoos that strip and cause extra dryness and frizziness. Shampoo less often with mild shampoo or try a conditioner-only wash (co-wash).

Keep hydrated internally. Drink plenty of water. Nourish your hair like you nourish your skin. In other words, eat a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables. This will help you to avoid hair breakage and keep your hair soft and lustrous.

Cooler Showers and Baths: Did you know that hot water in winter dries out skin and hair?

Sun Protection– Especially important  during winter season for both skin and hair. The sun can dry hair and fade color quicker.

Protect hair in winter season.Stay protected for warmth, but avoid harsh fabrics like wool. Direct contact can cause drying and hair breakage.

Yes, you should wear a hat, not only to keep you warm but also to protect your hair from the cold winter season. However, a hat made of cashmere rather than wool is preferred, as wool is very absorbent and will suck the moisture out of your hair, leaving it dry and prone to static. Also, the raw texture of wool is harsh and can cause hair breakage, while cashmere will ensure that it stays looking beautifully smooth and silky when you come in from the cold.

To avoid hair breakage, you can also cover dry hair with a scarf, or hat, beret, cap that is satin or silk-lined (you can make these linings yourself or have someone else do it –sew or glue)* If you don’t like hats, try an updo, pulled back in a bun and snood or use clips to hold your hair down to protect scalp from sun.

Dry hair naturally and use common sense: Don’t walk outside in winter with ‘naked’ and wet hair. Ice does not belong on your hair! It will snap it right off! Avoid hair breakage:

Letting your hair dry naturally is best in winter. Make sure your hair is totally dry before going outside. If this is not possible, cover your hair with a hair-friendly head covering. Remove when you reach your destination and let air dry.

Try NOT to turn up the heat. Heated appliances can damage and cause further hair breakage. For our hair, it’s really best to avoid heated appliances altogether if we’re willing to go that route. However, if we simply can’t deal with the results then: Use an ionizing heat appliance to reduce heat damage. Point the device away from your scalp, thus avoiding damage to the hair cuticle. Prior to drying, flat ironing or using heated rollers, etc. apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner or thermal heat protection cream to hair. Keep heat on medium to low and use a heat diffuser on blow dryers.

Hair Dye with Metallic Salts –a Danger for Men and Women

Hair Dye and Textile Dyeing

WARNING:  Metallic Salts -Extreme Caution MUST Be Used in Textile Dyeing

Generally, in natural textile dyeing, the objective in selecting a mordant (a substance that sets the dye) -is to try and select the least toxic one! Metallic salts are commonly used as a mordant in textile dyeing and a tremendous amount of caution has to be exercised to avoid toxic reaction.

Be Careful! Avoid Metallic Salts in Hair Dye.WARNING:  Metallic Salts -a Toxic Poison in Hair Dyeing

Human hair fiber should definitely be treasured and treated with more care than the clothes on our backs. Shouldn’t caution of the highest extreme be used when selecting a hair dye to color our hair ‘fibers’? Yet, drug store and beauty supply houses are lined with shelves of these toxic hair dyes!

In fact, care must be exercised even when purchasing what we believe to be ‘natural’ henna hair dye mixes. Reading ingredient labels is absolutely essential. However, some countries aren’t required to even list their ingredients on the label and these products are being exported to the United States and other countries! Unsuspecting consumers reason that if they are being sold at the local retail store, then they must be safe to use.

Metallic salt is included in the ingredients of the majority of chemical hair dye products, as well as so-called ‘natural compound henna’ hair dye mixes. Unknowingly, many consumers are misled by advertising that motivate them to use harmful hair dyes in the pursuit of more youthful looks.
Men- Cover Gray Naturally.
For instance, the hair dyes for men, that gradually cover gray hair are filled with metallic salt. These dyes have been banned in many European countries. However, they’re easily found on the grocery shelves in the U.S.A. and a few other countries. In view of the toxicity of these ingredients, why take a chance with your health and hair? Avoid potential adverse dermatological reactions from these and other chemical ingredients.

Stay away from faulty hair dye packaging! A few years ago, I wanted to try what I thought was natural hair color dye. I ordered a premixed “natural” henna hair dye from an online store and suffered a severe allergic reaction from the metallic salt that was in the product (even though the henna compound did not contain PPD). My hair fell out in spots and my scalp broke out in horrible blisters. I had to wear a wig for months until my hair grew back and my skin cleared. That was the sad end of using chemical hair dyes -and the search for totally natural hair color- for me!

Avoid Metallic Salt in Hair Dyes –Go Totally Natural.

Use a truly all natural henna hair dye. Even the FDA approves of it as totally natural hair color dye. Traditionally, you could do your own mixing of plants and herbs to color your hair. Then wait literally for hours for the dye release to take place, before applying the paste on your hair –but you no longer have to. Quite frankly, most folks just don’t have the time.

Saba Botanical of USA has contributed in groundbreaking research and promotion of nontoxic, natural  solutions for dyeing natural hair color -with a quick dye release. This has led to the creation of Lustrous Henna, a top quality plant-based, natural hair color dye, mixed with other completely all natural botanicals to create more than ten shades of totally natural hair color. They also carry top quality pure henna for traditional mixing, body art quality henna and a variety of other all-natural botanicals for healthier hair care.

One Happy Man’s Testimonial

“Love your product! I am 85% grey and ordered the Lustrous Henna Soft Black along with the Indigo. I used three parts of Lustrous Henna Soft Black and one part of Indigo. I love the results. I got a very dark brown to black color hair which was exactly what I was looking for.

I used chemical dyes two or three times and developed severe reactions to the chemicals used in those products. With the Lustrous Henna Soft Black and Indigo I just get great looking hair with no reactions. Would recommend to anyone looking for natural products”.
